Periodontal disease affects one out of every five adults and is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Research has shown that periodontal disease can affect your entire system and is linked to many other very serious diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, pre-term birth. It has been shown that this link is not only caused by bacteria in the mouth but also by the inflammation caused by periodontal disease. Periodontal disease typically begins with common symptoms such as red, puffy or bleeding gums or gums that are receding away from your teeth. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress into a more serious form of periodontal disease and could require periodontal scaling and root planning or even surgery to remove the bacteria and reduce the inflammation in your mouth.
